Here is the short version of the required information for an @sopris.net account:
- Incoming mail server: mail.sopris.net
- POP3 Username/Login: joesmith@sopris.net (your full email address)
- Outgoing mail server: smtp1.sopris.net
- My outgoing server requires authentication should be enabled. If it asks for a username and password you would use your full email address as the username and your email password for the password.
If you are just wanting to verify your settings you can skip to the to that section by clicking HERE
To set up a new email account:
Note: Screenshots are using OS X Leopard. Tiger is very similar and you should see approximately the same screen of information.
If this is your first time using the Mac Mail client then the new user wizard will automatically start. If it doesn't you need to click on Mail on the top menu bar and then Preferences. Once it opens then click on Accounts and the + sign towards the bottom of the left hand side of the dialog box. When the wizard starts you will see the following screen and should fill in the appropriate boxes with your information. Click Continue when you are finished:

You should now be at the Incoming Mail Server dialog box and need to enter the appropriate information again using your email address and password when appropriate. Once you are finished click on Continue and it will take a minute for the information to be verified. If it fails, please recheck your information and make sure your Internet connection is working:

You should now be at the Outgoing Mail Server dialog box. Enter the appropriate information and make sure you check "Use Authentication". Once you are finished click on Continue and it will again try and verify the information:

You should now be at the Account Summary screen where you can verify all the information you entered and then click on Create.

There is one setting that gets defaulted that needs to be unchecked after the account is created. Follow the below instructions for "Verifying an Existing Account" and make sure that you get the "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" unchecked.
Verifying an Existing Account:
Start your Mac Mail program and then click on Mail on the top menu bar, then Preferences, and then the Accounts tab to get to a screen that should look like the below:

You can verify that all your information for server names and user names match just substituting your actual information where appropriate. You then need to verify that your have the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" settings set properly. Click on the selection arrows where "smtp1.sopris.net" is listed and then click on Edit Server List and then the Advanced tab for it. This is where Tiger and Leopard versions of OS X diff a bit. Tiger users will just click on Server Settings underneath "smtp1.sopris.net" and there will not be an Advanced tab, but the options are the same and you should verify you have your full email address for the the "User Name" and your email address password entered and that "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" is unchecked.

If everything is correct you can click OK and then close the Preferences for Mac Mail. If you made any changes it will ask you if you want to save them.
